The Nerdery Movie Night #12: A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night & Caesar Popcorn

Vampires & feminism & anchovies, oh my!

Caesar Popcorn

Dave: This was a gorgeous movie to watch - the director really exploited the black and white grandeur for all its worth, really emphasizing the sunken, dark eyes of the leads and the gritty industrial landscapes that frame most of the film. The resolution felt a bit eager: they wanted the film to feel more art-y than it was. But I'd probably watch it again. (⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️)

The popcorn tastes like fish. I had to eat some cake to get the taste out of my mouth. Really. Who eats fish popcorn? (⭐️1/2)

Joe: Four words: Iranian Feminist Vampire Film. There's a lot of homage going on in this movie, particularly to spaghetti westerns, but it's far more difficult to categorize. It's kind of romantic, kinda horrific, and very, very feminist. The vampire, a female, wears a chador that mirrors the cape of a vampire, but it's far more liquidy and sinister. That she feeds only on men drives home the criticism of subjugated femininity in middle eastern cultures. As an added bonus, it is, by far, one of the most visually striking films I've ever seen. (⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2)

This popcorn was a pain in the ass to make, and I can't say the effort was worth it. For one thing, the flavor profile was weirdly inconsistent. At first it tasted like nothing, then it tasted lemony - despite only having a teaspoon of lemon zest - then it tasted fishy, and then just plain old oily. I can't say it's the worst popcorn on this list, but it is far from the best. (⭐️⭐️)
