The Nerdery Movie Night #148: Thunder Force and Superb Popcorn Snack

Spencer & McCarthy, Election 2024. Superb Popcorn Snack for Secretary of Noms, 2021.

Superb Popcorn Snack

Dave: The last time we saw our niece and nephew, they were obsessed with this Netflix kid-oriented action movie called We Can Be Heroes. It had special effects that looked like Instagram filters and a plot that was so predictable it put TV fishing shows to shame. In the hands of lesser actors, Thunder Force could easily have sunk to We Can Be Heroes territory. The plot was ridiculous and the character development was incidental at best, but Octavia Spencer and Melissa McCarthy made this worth watching. The “we’re 40-something women in superhero suits” jokes didn’t get old, and both McCarthy and Spencer managed to create some really sweet, heartfelt moments while seducing giant crab-men, throwing city buses, and violently taser-ing their enemies. I feel sure it wouldn’t hold up to a second viewing, but like We Can Be Heroes, it provided mindless entertainment to its target audience (in this case, women of a certain age and gay men) and made for a fun, if ridiculous evening. Sometimes when Joe makes a really good popcorn, I imagine that my hands are like the giant claws in that claw machine game, where kids try to win stuffed teddy bears or cheap watches by aiming a flimsy claw at things that are probably super glued together. Except in my popcorn-claw scenario, I hit pay dirt every time, coming up with pile after pile of delicious popcorn. This popcorn - whatever it was called - was prime claw-hand popcorn fodder: buttery, salty, and a little sweet, with some kind of herbs in it so I could pretend it was healthy while shoving it into my mouth. Joe: We're major fans of both Octavia Spencer and Melissa McCarthy in this household, so this film seemed like a surefire hit. To be truthful, though, it's pretty fucking stupid. But it's also pretty fucking stupid in the most entertaining way possible. Jason Bateman is essentially playing Michael Bluth but with crab pincers for arms, Academy Award winner Melissa Leo plays a quasi-robotic (predictably) turncoat lab assistant, and Academy Award winner Spencer spends a lot of time pursing her lips and looking dismayed at McCarthy's ignorance. Is it high art? Absolutely not. Did I laugh a lot at the low-stakes shenanigans? Yep. Do I regret a moment of it? I don't. Will I regret giving it the score I did in a few years? Probably. WHO ARE YOU, KIRK CASTLE, WHO ARE YOU? This popcorn has a batshit stupid name and an equally batshit insane combination of herbs and spices, but goddamn if we didn't plow through the entire bowl in ten minutes. This was more ridiculously delicious than it had any right to be. But here we are. There's nothing more to say. (⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2)
