The Nerdery Movie Night #157: The Suicide Squad and Cowboy Popcorn Mix

We both want to ride this kind of cowboy into the sunset. The movie, though, leaves us at odds.

Cowboy Popcorn Mix

Dave: Rebooting a mediocre movie is usually a recipe for making an even more mediocre movie. The Suicide Squad reboot, while occasionally funny and clever, follows that formula and ends up being pretty bad. The campy chapter titles that appear throughout the movie and the anime-like day-glo monster starfish (yes, there is a monster starfish) feel pretty disassociated from the rest of the film, which, oddly, takes itself a little too seriously. And the attempt to give all of the Suicide Squad characters paper-thin backstories manages to cheapen the entire movie - one touching backstory is even shoehorned in more or less as the movie is ending. The end result is that no one besides Margot Robbie and Idris Elba is at all memorable. Granted, I’m not a big superhero movie person, so perhaps I’m not the optimal audience for this movie. Still, it feels like there were ideas for a few different Suicide Squad movies and some studio exec couldn’t decide, so we got…whatever this was. (⭐️⭐️)

I don’t know what kind of cowboys like Cheez-Its, butter, and ranch dressing mix, but whoever they are, they’re my kind of cowboys. They probably also have blood pressure problems. Yee haw! We haven’t done a lot of recipes that are popcorn mixes, with a larger ratio of mix-ins than popcorn, and having tasted this one, I’m not sure why we’ve been avoiding them. If they’re anything like this one, they’re darn delicious, and we have bonus snack foods left over! Granted, Cheez-Its, Rice Chex, pretzels, ranch dressing mix, and butter aren’t high-class, but together they’re pretty delicious. Also, according to my food-tracking app, I’ve also had more sodium today than on any other day in six months. I’m sure that’s a coincidence, though. (️️️️️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️)

Joe: 126 Nerdery Movie Nights ago, we watched a movie called Suicide Squad. We were both incredibly underwhelmed by it. When this, The Suicide Squad (distinctive because of the definite article?), was released, I had zero intentions of seeing it. But there seemed to be so much enthusiasm behind it, and after an effusive review from my RoD, Ally, I had to see what the fuss was all about. Good news, everyone. This was light years better than the other Suicide Squad. It was very funny, action-packed, and gratuitously violent. Although the heroes are "bad guys", it's hard not to root for them, especially when they're eviscerating the other bad guys in spectacularly gruesome ways. Idris Elba and Margot Robbie are, as always, easy to watch, and literally every actor seems to be having the times of their lives. It's hard not to turn off your brain and get sucked into that level of fun. (⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2)

I was really hungry tonight, and worried that the popcorn wouldn't tie me over. I couldn't have been wronger. Packed with Cheez-its, pretzels, and Chex, this was like eating Chex Mix - but better. Sprinkled with ranch seasoning, it's a filling, salty treat. In fact, I think I could have this for dinner on a weekly basis and be perfectly satisfied. You did it again, Kirk Castle, you magnificent bastard. (⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️)
