The Nerdery Movie Night #183: Gaslight and 30 Second Gourmet Popcorn

YAAAAAAAS, Angela Lansbury! YAAAAAASSSSS.

30 Second Gourmet Popcorn

Dave: I’m trying to imagine now what the central trope of "gaslight" would be in a remake. Instead of the gas lights in the house mysteriously dimming when the main character’s scoundrel of a husband is [SPOILER ALERT] rooting around in the attic for jewels, what would the modern equivalent be? Maybe the battery in their (for some bizarre reason) shared cell phone is always dying because he’s using the flashlight app? Or perhaps they’re both gay and the too-close Grindr location gives away the fact that he’s not going to his “studio” to “write music.” At any rate, despite leaning way too hard into the “helpless, overwrought woman” trope, this was an enjoyable film. Watching the husband slowly convince the wife that she’s losing her marbles and then seeing the wife turn that all against him in a satisfying final scene is masterful. And watching a young Angela Lansbury play a tart of a maid is the icing on the cake! (⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2)

Maybe we should keep Mrs. Dash on hand regularly. When Joe told me the basic ingredients for this popcorn, I was ready to have to supplement our dinner with something more edible. Turns out, it’s actually good, though we did cheat and add a fair bit of salt too it. I know that misses the point - I heard the product description often enough watching The Price is Right when I was growing up - but it does make a darn good and easy popcorn! (️️️️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️)

Joe: From the gutter to the stars - that's how we roll at The Nerdery™. After last week's utter debacle of filmmaking, most movies would have seemed like masterpieces. But this movie is an actual masterpiece. Impeccably plotted with some damn fine performances, especially from Bergman who transmits her character's descent into madness with effortless pathos. Sure, there is some clunky dialogue that results in some unintentional comedy (wtf is up with the final 15 seconds?), but over all this is a thoroughly gripping movie. The art production is truly phenomenal - it's no wonder Gaslight nabbed the Oscar in that category. Bergman's was also well-earned. And Angela. Oh, Angela. You absolute gem. (⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2)

I returned to "Kirk Castle" for this week's popcorn, and the laughable moniker for this popcorn was rivaled only by the laughable recipe. This is literally popcorn with melted butter and Mrs. Dash seasoning. Luckily, our neighbors had the seasoning so I didn't have to buy any that would heretofore remain untouched in our cabinet. I'd never tasted Mrs. Dash before, and it's merely okay. So I finished with a little salt, because in what world would one eat popcorn with no salt? I'm glad I did. The final product was sheer genius. Once again, our Kirk did not fail us. (⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2)
