The Nerdery Movie Night #206: First Wives Club and Ajika & Onion Popcorn

Keaton + Midler + Hawn: let's reunite this trio, plz.

Ajika & Onion Popcorn

Dave: Is this where Hillary Clinton got her white pantsuit idea? If it is, she chose well. Despite some lingering girl-power, capitalism-fueled ridiculousness that aged weirdly, First Wives Club made me tear up a bit. There’s something about high school and college friendships that’s formative and enduring. Mostly, I loved watching Bette Midler, Goldie Hawn, and Diane Keaton (with brief appearances by Sarah Jessica Parker, Stockard Channing, and Dame Maggie Smith) - their chemistry was amazing to watch, and the script didn’t quite make their exes into complete villains, refreshingly. It was a lovely romp, even if the decidedly sit-com, wacky vibe made it a little unbelievable. (️️️⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2)

We’re reaching the end of the “what do we have in the house?” popcorns, since we ditched a lot of food when we moved. Luckily, we still had this lovely Trader Joe’s Georgian seasoning blend that paired nicely with the fried onions we’ve been putting on our salads for the past week. But really, what food isn’t made better with melted butter, friend onion, and spices? (️️️️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️)

Joe: Although we generally try to avoid movies we've seen before, Dave had never seen The First Wives Club, and I hadn't seen it since my sophomore year in college when it was a Friday Night Movie on campus. It gave me "yaaas queen" vibes then, and frankly, it still does. It's insane to me that Keaton, Midler, and Hawn are all playing characters who are ALL THE AGE I AM NOW. The plot is super-thin and the writing is deeply mediocre, but it still felt fun and fresh. And it made me yearn for the 90s. Seriously. The modern era seems so much darker than the 1990s, and The First Wives Club was just the dose of nostalgia I needed. It's by no means terrific filmmaking, but it's solid. And sometimes that's all I need. (⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2)

I think we've hit upon the Golden Mean of popcorn creation. After having tried Food Network extremes, Popcorn Board bangers, and sus recipes from questionable (self-published?) books, the secret is straightforward: popcorn plus butter plus an herb or spice or spice blend plus salt = above & beyond. Dave apparently sprinkled Trader Joe's Ajika Georgian Seasoning Blend (thanks, TK!), threw on some Lidl™ crispy fried onions, and called it a day. Damn, it was delicious. (⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2)
