The Nerdery Movie Night #36: The Family Fang and Everything Bagel Popcorn

Joe gushes over Nicole Kidman while Dave wonders why linoleum isn't more popular as a breakfast dish.

Everything Bagel Popcorn

Dave: You should never read the book before you see the movie. I read this book years ago, and I was taken with the backstory drawn around a series of public performance art pieces and the unsettling way that everything resolved. The movie feels a bit like the Hallmark Channel version: all the coarse edges are ground down until it’s palatable and even a little sweet. But that grinding down misses the point: the uprooting and tumult that parents leaving their children for art’s sake engenders. The movie wasn’t awful, but just toned down the book too much for my taste. (⭐️⭐️⭐️)

I hate bagels. They’re so chewy. If God had wanted us to eat something that chewy first thing in the morning, shoe leather or linoleum would be on breakfast menus all over the land. But this popcorn, having the flavor of bagels without the chewiness, was pretty good. The caraway and sesame together occasionally left a fishy aftertaste, but all in all I’d eat it again. (⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️)

Joe: Like Meryl Streep, Nicole Kidman can pretty much turn any shitburger into a riveting piece of art. Luckily, The Family Fang benefits from a fairly tight script and some solid directing. Kidman is predictably outstanding, and she’s joined by Bateman, Walker, and Plunkett to produce a film that explores dysfunctional families with a deft amount of wit and pathos. It doesn’t always work, but when it does - it’s a treat. (⭐️⭐️⭐️)

Everything bagels are the stuff dreams are made of. This popcorn captures that magic with appropriate portions of black & white sesame seeds, garlic, onion, and - my favorite - caraway seeds. With its buttery aftertaste, all this homage is missing is a shmear. It comes awfully close, though. Definitely one to put in the Make Again pile. (⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️)
