The Nerdery Movie Night #38: The Babysitter & Truffle Popcorn

In which we answer two burning questions: is truffle oil really that great? Are 80s slasher flick homages really necessary?

Truffle Popcorn

Dave: All the movies I had on my list to watch tonight were depressing: movies about slavery, unkindness, plagues, serial killers, and depression. Joe hinted at wanting something lighter, so I found this camp-fest. And I adore camp. The Babysitter was like an ABC Family movie meets a B-horror flick. Think Adventures in Babysitting meets Cabin in the Woods. The plot is flimsy but the actors go all in for the ridiculous occult-themed, nerdy coming-of-age romp. It’s predictable but fun - we both laughed out loud more than once. And as a bonus there’s a ridiculously attractive shirtless guy throughout a good 1/3 of the film. Rowr. (⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️)

I expected truffle popcorn to be luxurious. It was good - salty and earthy - but nothing to write home about, particularly. The fact the popcorn was slightly above average doesn’t make up for the difficulty we had finding truffle oil (BTW, if you want some cheap, go to TJ Maxx). It was tasty - we finished the bowl halfway through the movie - but not worth the effort. (⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2)

Joe: The Babysitter feels like a needless reboot of an 80s horror franchise that much of the world had forgotten - and for good reason. Under the aggressively bro-ish direction of McG (remember the garish Charlie’s Angels films of the early aughts?), this film is brazenly idiotic. And cartoonishly gory. And proudly stupid. AND stupidly funny. God help me, I enjoyed nearly every blood-soaked minute of it. (⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2)

Like many of the popcorns we’ve tried over the last 18 months, this one relies heavily on the quality of a key ingredient. We now live in northwest Ohio. Not really a truffle oil haven. After looking for ages, we found this particular brand at TJ Maxx. Read that sentence again. TJ. Maxx. Anyway, the popcorn lacked the earthiness of truffle oil, but it wasn’t bad. The parmesan complemented the other flavors, though the oil combined with butter was a bit much. I think I’d make this again - just with a different truffle oil. We’ll see what that yields.
