The Nerdery Movie Night #40: Carol & Rosemary Parmesan Popcorn

Updated: Feb 24, 2019

In which we snack on a go-to favorite whilst sobbing uncontrollably.

Rosemary Parmesan Popcorn

Dave: As with many movies set in the 1950s and 60s, my favorite thing about this film was the scenery, props, and costumes. Not that the story and acting weren’t fabulous, but I’m a sucker for a big old 1950s car, scenes awash in cigarettes and alcohol and loads of smart tweed jackets. That said, the performances in this movie were amazing. Watching lesbians navigate the 1950s was harrowing and the director does a great job of making heterosexuality almost atmospheric - it’s everywhere all the time, but in a way that doesn’t feel contrived or clumsy. But you could also watch it for the amazing clothes and be satisfied. (⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2)

This popcorn is perfect. It’s light and salty, but the fairly small amount of olive oil makes it taste rich and a little fruity. Getting little bits of fresh rosemary as you eat is a lovely surprise. And this popcorn is good at room temperature, too - lucky for us since it’s snowing sideways outside right now in Northwest Ohio. This is one I hope we will make again for company or just for a fancy date night. Definitely a keeper. (⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️)

Joe: Emotionally resonant, Carol is a film deserving of all its accolades - in fact, it’s criminal that it wasn’t recognized at all during awards season. Tons of nominations, but no major wins. It is a veritable Master’s class in acting. Blanchett, Mara, and Paulson all bring their A+ game, with subtle and emotional performances. The scene between Paulson and Mara in the diner is captivating, one that should be dissected in film studies courses for its restraint and nuance. Yet the acting, powerful and raw as it is, is only a fraction of a film that is already beautifully directed, scored, and framed. I’d watch it multiple times if I could avoid the crying jags I had the first time around. (⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️)

Full confession: this is the third time we’ve made this popcorn. That’s how good it is. Rosemary is, by far, my favorite herb. Its camphorous scent and woodsy bite is complemented beautifully by Parmesan’s nuttiness. A dash of salt and some olive oil round out a popcorn easy to make and hard to resist. A true winner - but use fresh rosemary. I can’t imagine this being as good with the dry jarred stuff. (⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️)
