The Nerdery Movie Night #45: I, Tonya and Movie Theater Popcorn

Updated: Feb 24, 2019

Allison Janney is a national treasure.

Movie Theater Popcorn

Dave: There’s nothing funny to say about this movie. I remember the whole Tonya Harding saga, and this movie took me back. All of the principal actors *channeled* their real life analogues. Alison Janney was particularly brilliant - darkly funny and tragic. The skating costumes, the 90s references, and the abundance of Aqua Net really cemented this film in its time and place. Maybe there was some discussion of social class that happened in the media contemporaneously, but it escaped me as a kid. Now, it’s kind of harrowing to watch what happened to a blue collar woman who deigned to intrude on middle class life. (⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2)

I’m not sure why I was so surprised at how good this popcorn is. I mean, it’s all butter and salt. And it’s named after some of the best popcorn on earth, but is made without that weird machine at the movie theatre that spits out butter that’s a wee bit *too* yellow. Anyway, most things wouid be better with a few spoonfuls of salt and a half cup (!!!) of butter on them. This is a good and simple popcorn recipe to have in our back pockets. At least until our arteries harden and our blood pressure goes sky high. (⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2)

Joe: What I was expecting: a lurid biopic that just happened to have an outstanding performance from the perennially underrated Allison Janney. What I got: a profoundly moving, nuanced portrait of a complex human being. Robbie’s performance is impeccable (the scene in the courtroom, in all its 45 seconds, reduced me to unexpected, shameful tears). Janney earned that Oscar like a boss - the bite she give LaVona is both witty and searing. The cinematography is flawless. The script is both laugh-out-loud funny and brutally heartfelt. Even the tongue-in-cheek moments feel authentic. I loved this film. (⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2)

There is nothing better than shitty, salty, buttery popcorn from the movie theater. This recipe is about as close as you can get to the real thing. We finished it - all 16 cups of it - twenty minutes into the film. Fuck yeah. This is the real deal. (⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️)
