The Nerdery Movie Night #54: Verónica & Bacon Ranch Popcorn

Pure terror and bacon bacon bacon bacon!

Bacon Ranch Popcorn

Dave: I chose this movie thinking it would be a fun, campy, B-horror romp at the end of a kind of long week. Instead, it was damn disturbing. The plot - innocent teen girl accidentally awakens a being from the beyond - was well-worn. But the child actors were brilliant, the cheesy Spanish power ballad soundtrack was inspired, and the cinematography was gorgeous - the creepy blind nun was particularly shot well. Even if the suspense and the final plot twist were expected, it was still creepy and terrifying. We may both need a fairly strong nightcap to sleep soundly tonight. (⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2)

This popcorn was great, but really, what foods aren’t made better with ranch dressing and bacon? They’re like the Helen Keller card in Apples to Apples: they can’t lose! (⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2)

Joe: Verónica joins the ranks of A Quiet Place, It Follows, The Babadook, and Ils to prove that you don’t need violence or gore to be even remotely terrifying. Few horror movies (except those listed above - and a handful of other films) have caused me to get goosebumps all up and down my body. Verónica masterfully accomplishes this. The tone is foreboding, the cinematography creatively terrifying, and the acting is spot-on. In fact, the success of the film rests entirely on Sandra Escacena, who plays the titular role, and she pulls it off with a confidence that belies her years. Yeah, it’s (very) loosely based on a true story, but even without that caveat, it would be a top notch horror film. (⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️)

Bacon makes everything better. Our previous bacon popcorn recipes certainly help the case, but this recipe just drove it home. As with other recipes that require a pre-fab ingredient, this one hinges on the quality of aforementioned ingredient. Apparently, Kroger makes a pretty solid ranch dressing mix. This popcorn is close to perfection. Bacon-y, salty, and zesty. I wish I had doubled the recipe. Then again, I don’t know that our cholesterol levels need that. I can’t wait to make this again. (⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️)
