The Nerdery Movie Night #64: Dumplin' and Coconut Curry Popcorn

Updated: Feb 24, 2019

Netflix brings a sassy YA novel to life and we taste a white person's idea of India.

Dave: Did I get a little weepy at a movie that’s essentially an after school special with Dolly Parton and drag queens? Yes. Am I ashamed? Absolutely not. The plot might have been trite, the writing might have been leaden at times, but this was just what I needed this weekend: a fluffy, feel-good story with Jennifer Aniston playing an uptight pageant mom and some hot guy born in the 90s as the love interest. It’s too neat, too tidy, and too wholesome (despite Ginger Minj being in the cast), but it’s worth a watch.(⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2)

Coconut curry popcorn sounds like it should be a knock-it-out-of-the-ballpark recipe, right? A little curry, a little spice, a little coconut and everyone is happy. Sadly, this recipe called for honey (!?). The little bursts of sweetness and the curry’s playing second fiddle to the sweet elements mean that I won’t be voting to make this one again. Even if we did eat the entire bowl 30 minutes into the movie (⭐️⭐️⭐️)

Joe: Yaass body positivity. Yaass female empowerment. Yaass drag queens. Yaass Dolly Parton. I’m usually firm in reading the book before seeing the movie, but it was Dave’s turn to pick the film, so here we are. Dumplin’ hit all the sweet spots for me: it wasn’t too saccharine, it had good performances, and Dolly Parton songs were sprinkled throughout. Plus Danielle MacDonald, who played Willowdean, was fabulous. A feel good movie that didn’t make me gag. Too much. Maybe will read the book now. Maybe. (⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️)

I would eat this popcorn every day until the day I die. That is all. (⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️)

Popcorn recipe from: Party Popcorn by Ashton Epps Swank. (Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, 2014).
