The Nerdery Movie Night #66: Murder on the Orient Express and Bacon Teriyaki Popcorn

Updated: Feb 24, 2019

Insane moustaches and mediocre bacon. How is that possible?

Dave: Despite a pretty amazing cast (Johnny Depp, Michelle Pfeiffer, Judi Dench, Willem Dafoe, etc), this was a less-than-satisfying film. Perhaps a wordy, cerebral mystery doesn’t translate well to the big screen. Perhaps, as a colleague (hi, Lindy!) suggested, the real star is Kenneth Branagh’s facial hair. Or perhaps I was a wee bit too tipsy to follow all the plot points closely. Whichever was correct, I’m declaring this movie mediocre at best, though it did make me want to book a fancy railway vacation (⭐️⭐️1/2)

Should teriyaki flavored popcorn taste vaguely of fish and brown sugar? I’m not sure if it should, but ours did. We could have erred in using a regular-priced teriyaki sauce and run-of-the-mill bacon for the popcorn. But if you’re cooking with bacon, you shouldn’t have to use the fancy, thick cut stuff for your dish to taste good. On a positive note, we avoided the curse of the soggy popcorn, but all the cooking distilled the flavors of the ingredients down to a sweet, fishy, bizarre end product that I won’t be trying again (⭐️⭐️)

Joe: It’s been about a decade since I read the book. I enjoyed it greatly. The 1974 film with Anthony Perkins, Vanessa Redgrave, Ingrid Bergman... (shall I go on?) was marvelous: it was quite true to the book. But we’re in a different era than 1974. If there isn’t an insane amount of action, moviegoers won’t stick around, right? No one wants to just watch people yap for two hours, like they did in 1974, do they? Especially in a mystery. So we should have an idiotic chase sequence! And Leslie Odom Jr. firing a gun! And the final deductions taking place in a tunnel! And Hercule Poirot’s mustache being more of a joke than a character trait! Because why not! Honestly, the liberties taken were quite unnecessary, and the film suffered greatly because of them. Though, quite frankly, I’d watch Michelle Pfeiffer eat a steak as a feature film. She’s still magnetic after all these years. (⭐️⭐️1/2)

This recipe should have been a home run. [Don’t tell Dave: I ate about half the bacon while making it and had to make more!] Plus teriyaki and bacon is a great combination (who knew?). But there was something slightly off. It tasted a little burned... which I think was a result of boiling the brown sugar, teriyaki sauce, and corn syrup before adding the bacon. I’d like to give this another chance, because I think it has the potential to be mindblowing. (⭐️⭐️⭐️)
