The Nerdery Movie Night #73: Baby Driver and Savory Popcorn de Provence Popcorn

Baby drives in the median instead of the fast lane, and we lick the bowl because Popcorn.org is our new religion.

Savory Popcorn de Provence

Dave: The cast and soundtrack in this movie was great, but it felt like it was conflicted - was it a crime drama, an adventure film, or a romance? By trying to do all three, we end up with a bunch of stereotypical characters, a love story with no underpinning (did they fall in love off screen?), and a flimsy, hackneyed action plot (one last job and I’m out!). Even the main character’s deep relationship to music isn’t as deeply mined as it could have been. The acting was great, but the script could have used some heavy editing (⭐️⭐️⭐️).

With 1/3 cup of butter, 2 tablespoons of herbes de Provence, and a fair amount of garlic, this popcorn was a winner before we took the first bite. Still, it was delicious and we nearly finished the bowl before the opening credits finished rolling (⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2).

Joe: This film came highly recommended, by both the Hollywood Film Critics writ large and a good friend (who loaned us the Blu-Ray™ DVD). I went in with high expectations. Like, super-high. After all, the writer/director also brought us Sean of the Dead and Hot Fuzz. And while Baby Driver was delightfully fun and had some pulse-pounding moments, I can't say it quite lived up to the aforementioned films. The soundtrack was uniformly terrific, and Ansel Elgort is an absolute snack (#jailbait), but I can't say much more than "a pleasant diversion". So let's leave it at that. (⭐️⭐️⭐️)

I don't know why we futzed around with the Food Network's "50 Popcorn Recipes" when all along we could have just turned to the Official Popcorn Consulate's collection of mind-blowing recipes. Y'all, I feel like I've said this with every recipe we've cribbed from this particular website: this is the gospel. The herbs de Provence (we use Penzey's because #liberals) bring the right blend of floral and bite to the party, and mixed with butter and salt, it packed the perfect amount of punch. Even the fennel comes through in a delightfully unexpected manner. Thanks, Popcorn Board! (⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️)
