The Nerdery Movie Night #84: Little Evil and Elote Inspired Popcorn

Our kick-off to Horror Movie month appropriately references multiple horror movies, and we get a popcorn "inspired" by... corn...?

Elote Inspired Popcorn

Dave: This movie took the “kids are evil” subtext from movies like Child’s Play, Children of the Corn, Carrie, and Troop Beverly Hills and spun it out to ridiculous effect. Adam Scott was solid as Satan’s stepdad, but Bridget Everett stole the show as the lesbian, monster truck loving stepdad/sidekick. The devil worshipers and secret ceremony at the end were way over the top, but there were lots of quality “kids are awful” jokes and call outs to other evil kid movies sewn into the plot (⭐️⭐️⭐️)

The curse of the wet popcorn strikes again! If the popcorn had stayed crunchy underneath the cheese, cilantro, and hot sauce this would have been a five star recipe. As it was, it’s a ten napkin recipe that’s still pretty darn good. (⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️)

Joe: I appreciate what this flick was attempting to do: turn "bad seed" horror films on its ears. The little nods to those films is a horror-buff's dream: the spot-on Omen reference in the first two minutes is particularly inspiring, but there are diminishing returns as the movie progresses. Unfortunately, Little Evil never reaches true heights - it's always slightly shy of clever, witty, and scary. In fact, it isn't even remotely scary. It would've been better if it was. Still, the perfect soft-launch to our traditional October Is Scary Movie Month. (⭐️⭐️⭐️)

I have to admit: I was deeply disturbed that this wasn't just called "elote popcorn", but rather "elote inspired". Why the "inspired"? About a year ago, we made "Mexican Street Popcorn", and this one reminded me of it. Slightly. So maybe that's why the Popcorn Board went with "inspired". Like MSP, The popcorn was still soggy - I think baking it would solve this problem - but it was pretty damn delicious. Then again, queso fresco would make a piece of cardboard delicious. (⭐️⭐⭐⭐️)
