The Nerdery Movie Night #95: The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part and Garlic Ramen Popcorn

Let's just declare Tiffany Haddish a national treasure and move on with our lives. And while we're at it, let's also declare salty popcorn a national treasure.

Garlic Ramen Popcorn

Dave: A movie whose theme is “Everything’s not awesome, but we can make it a little better together” seems like the perfect note for all of us right now. Whether they’re talking about sibling rivalry or social distancing, it’s an apropos message. Bonus that the message of togetherness is delivered by Tiffany Haddish, Chris Pratt, Elizabeth Banks and a hilarious cast. Even the credits were worth watching! (⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️)

Our last adventure with ramen popcorn was, frankly, a disaster. But I didn’t want to go to the grocery store and brave the people-who-don’t-believe-in-social-distancing gauntlet, so I had to find a recipe we could make with what we had in the house. Luckily Tricia Yearwood via the Food Network had the answer and with a few tweaks, we had a delicious (if pretty salty) popcorn. We subbed dried garlic for fresh and subbed some olive oil for a little bit of the butter, but the combo of ramen seasoning packets with crunchy popcorn was hard to beat. Maybe we should just call this salt and MSG popcorn, but whatever. It was delicious. (⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️)

Joe: The very first Lego Movie was a delight: comical, upbeat, clever, and madcap. How could it possibly be topped? Well, with a comical, upbeat, clever, and madcap sequel. That also has Tiffany Haddish. Continuing with our theme of movies-that-make-a-pandemic-seem-less-horrifying, I opted with this one, and it was just what I needed. Like its predecessor, The Lego Move 2: The Second Part is totally manic, with much of the humor being tailored to adults in a wink-wink-nudge-nudge manner that's endearing rather than cloying. Plus the songs are ridiculously witty and the Notorious RBG cameos as a Lego toy. (⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2)

Most of the popcorns we've recently eaten have been "healthy". That is, no butter. Tonight, though. Oh, tonight. There was butter. There was also garlic. And salt. In spades. Friends, we gobbled this up in nanoseconds. And I wanted seconds. But I also don't want to emerge from quarantine without clogged arteries. Straight talk: I want to eat this popcorn every Friday night. We don't need to make any new popcorns. Also, my pores are going to reek of garlic for the next week or so. Enjoy, David! (⭐️⭐⭐⭐️⭐️)
