The Nerdery Movie Night #47: Come Sunday and Kettle Corn Popcorn

Updated: Feb 24, 2019

SPOILER ALERT: Soot-flavored popcorn is disgusting

Kettle Corn

Dave: Well, now I know why all my Unitarian friends were all crazy over this film. It’s based on a This American Life episode I’ve not heard, but I’ll seek out now. The acting was amazing, to a person - the entire cast was heartfelt and understated. There were so many passed up opportunities for scenery chewing that ultimately made this film so much better. You hear so many stories about people “getting saved” - it’s nice to watch someone get lost, wander, question, reflect, search and come out better for it. It’s a movie for our current era if there ever was one. (⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️)

USER ERROR. I may have accidentally gotten overzealous and put the sugar mixture in the kettle corn a little too early. Then, I stubbornly left it on the stove when only 2/3 of it popped because I was sure it would keep popping. Instead, we had something like a roux with popcorn seeds at the bottom that flavored everything. Not in a nice slightly-overdone-S’mores way. More like a this-tastes-mildly-like-soot way. I think there’s hope for this popcorn, but it’s by far the trickiest recipe yet. (⭐️⭐️)

Joe: Based on the truly excellent This American Life episode (“Heretics”), Come Sunday has a lot to live up to, and its success hangs largely on the central performance. Mercifully (and predictably), Ejiofor hands in a powerful, stirring turn as Carlton Pearson. Unfortunately, he’s undone by a fairly limp script that manages to lose the bite, surprise, and pathos of the radio piece, instead turning to melodrama - especially in its final act. A shame (⭐️⭐️1/2)

I think you really need a legit kettle to make proper kettle corn. (⭐️1/2)
