The Nerdery Movie Night #70: Grey Gardens and Down Home BBQ Popcorn

Updated: Mar 29, 2019

We kinda disagree - on both the movie (not the documentary!) and the popcorn. Still not sure if we watched/ate the same things.

Down Home BBQ Popcorn

Dave: I’m a fan of Grey Gardens the documentary. Even if it spawned shows like Hoarders and maybe even the Real Housewives franchise, it’s a brilliantly conceived film: outlandish enough to spark interest and be a spectacle, but quotidian enough for audiences to see themselves in it. Sadly, even the brilliant performances of Jessica Lange and Drew Barrymore (that accent! that flag dance!) weren’t enough to entirely redeem this maudlin, rose-spectacled take on the story of the downtrodden Beales. I loved the attempt to fill in the characters’ lives before the film, but I really enjoyed seeing them unfold more in the documentary, colored as they were by the camera and the likely selective memories of Little Edie and Big Edie. The sadness, strength, loneliness, and isolation from the original convey well in this film - Lange is masterful with the at once winsome and withering glance and Barrymore’s cutting asides and glances are heartbreaking. But some of the impact is lost, having all the loose ends wrapped up too nicely in the end. Bonus points for all the adorable cat co-stars! (⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2)

This popcorn is suffering from an identity crisis. Is it sweet? Is it smoky? Is it salty? Is it spicy? It ends up being all of those things - though abundantly sweet - and still not entirely satisfying. If they’d focused on a few kinds of tastes to highlight instead of throwing them all in, we might have had a winner. That said, we still ate the whole bowl, and well before Grey Gardens fell into complete disrepair. (⭐️⭐️⭐️)

Joe: I watched the documentary Grey Gardens more than a decade ago. I remember loving it, and thinking it was unintentionally funny and a bit pathetic. I also think it’s crucial to have seen it before watching this movie, which doesn’t regurgitate much from the documentary, but instead contextualizes it and strips away its exploitative nature. Lange and Barrymore are magnetic as Edith and Little Edie, and their recreations of the documentary bits are jaw-dropping in their accuracy. This is a tragic story, but it also has a lot of heart and is oddly affecting in its final act. Riveting from start to finish. (⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2)

This is the second popcorn we’ve tried from this website, and let it be known that we’re 2/2. The mixture of spices is quite bang-on, and the butter blended with liquid smoke (!) is pretty damn genius. I hit a wall 90% through the bowl, though. My tolerance for buttery goodness apparently *does* have a limit. The more you know! (⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️)
