The Nerdery Movie Night #103: Uncut Gems and Caramel Pecan Popcorn

We almost give up on a movie 45 minutes in and Dave indulges our sweetooths (sweeteeth?).

Caramel Pecan Popcorn

Dave: Well this was a slog. The plot consisted mainly of men with inscrutable backstories screaming at each other and then going to pawn shops. Everyone was so over the moon about Sandler’s acting, but, really, they could’ve just had a foghorn stand in for him. It would’ve been cheaper and probably had more range and subtlety. Also, everyone dressed and decorated their homes like it was 1986, but the titles clearly said 2012. There were no gripping plot surprises, and I was excited when characters died through the movie because it meant we were getting closer to the end. (⭐️)

So, we ordered dinner out tonight to celebrate our belated anniversary. I had a big hamburger, fries, and potato salad and I still ate roughly half this popcorn. It wasn’t simple to make - there was caramel to prepare - but the results were phenomenal. The caramel was sweet, but not sickly sweet and the pecans made it feel a little fancy, like an adult snack rather than a kid’s carnival midway treat. (⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2)

Joe: This movie had rave reviews. Adam Sandler had gotten major Oscar buzz. But here are a few questions I want to ask you before you buy into the absolutely insane rave reviews: do you like yelling? Like, a lot of yelling? Do you like a constant stream of profanity? Like, dialogue that's laden with almost nothing but? Do you like unlikeable characters making stupid decisions and talking over each other in constantly shouty voices? Do you like indistinct conversations because there's an absolutely unimaginable amount of cross-talking? Shouty McShouts-a-lot shouting and cross-talking and dumb decisions and characters who you want to push off a cliff? You do? Uncut Gems is right up your alley. (⭐️)

This popcorn was better than the movie, and I know it was an absolute labor of love for Dave to make. He spent almost all of his lunch break today making it, which I guess is a perk of working from home. It was sweet, and I liked it, but I had eaten too much for dinner and my head was literally ringing from all the goddamned shouting in the movie, so I couldn't really stomach much more than a couple handfuls. (⭐️⭐⭐️)
