The Nerdery Movie Night #106: Ma and Chili Lime Popcorn Snack Mix

Octavia Spencer makes a terrific psychopath, and we need to find more savory popcorn recipes. Please send us some.

Chili Lime Popcorn Snack Mix

Dave: Well, that was terrifying. Granted, the closing sequence was *very* B-horror film and many of the plot points felt derivative and tissue paper thin. But Octavia Spencer was absolutely terrifying - swinging between moods, putting on a normal face while deep down she’s a sociopath. And she’s so convincing you won’t look at your neighbors the same again for awhile. (⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2)

When Joe told me this was called “Spicy Lime Popcorn Snack” or whatever, I thought we’d hit the bottom of the barrel. Popcorn already is a snack, so calling something a popcorn snack is like insisting your water is wet or your food product is edible. I was pleasantly surprised - despite the obvious absence of either butter or olive oil, this was tasty. But then you could put chili powder and lime on stale bread it would still taste pretty good. I’m on the fence about this, but it does give me home that when we reach the End Of The Popcorn Recipes On The Internet, we’ll be able to make up our own for awhile. (⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️)

Joe: I don't even know where to begin. Maybe with... who can blame Sue Ann? These people were dicks to her, and I was kinda looking forward to watching her get revenge on the jackasses. There was one spectacular kill that was unexpected and sardonically funny, but the rest were... ultimately unsatisfying (and one was kind of unnecessary - but methinks it was an editing error or plot hole since it's, like, never addressed). Anyway. This was fine. Octavia Spencer was, predictably, brilliant and unnerving. The ending was... not great... and kinda icky. Minus the kinda. It was just plain icky. I stan Octavia, but... it was icky. (⭐️⭐️⭐️)

Here we go with the nutritional yeast again. Frankly, we bought this bag at Trader Joe's a couple years ago, and I swear we'll have to will it to someone when our time in this mortal coil eclipses. There's not a whole lot to say about this popcorn. Despite its unwieldy name, it's pretty standard fare. I did amp up the spices because they seemed anemic to me, but even me literally doubling the measurements couldn't save this from being good but not great. Kinda like Ma, really. (⭐️⭐️⭐️).
