The Nerdery Movie Night #114: The Breaker Upperers and Popcorn con Pesto

A film that's "comedy" in name only and a popcorn that's "pesto" in name only. A deeply average evening in the four-year history of The Nerdery Movie Night.

Popcorn con Pesto

Dave: I think someone had a great idea for a movie, but maybe the writers quit in the middle and they decided to roll with it anyway. The leads were both great and both absolutely hilarious, but there was way too much plot packed into a relatively short film. I didn’t much care about their backstory or the little story arcs of any of the minor characters because they were all so brief and formulaic. Still, there were a few good laughs, some great LGBT visibility that didn’t take itself too seriously, and some great chemistry between the two female leads. Sadly it wasn’t enough to completely carry the film (⭐️⭐️1/2)

We finished this popcorn, as is customary with good, salty popcorns, before the movie was even a quarter over. If I hadn’t known this was supposed to be pesto flavored, it would have easily been a 5-star recipe. Instead, though, it was like expecting Coke but getting Mr Pibb. It’s not necessarily bad, just not what you were expecting. The dried basil just doesn’t deliver the same punch and gets lost in the butter and Parmesan cheese. This is tasty, but it’s a far cry from a good pesto. But I guess “Parmesan and pine nut popcorn with a few anemic flakes of basil” just doesn’t sound the same. (⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2)

Joe: There are weeks that Dave shows me the film he's chosen and I'm flabbergasted. I've never heard of the movie, and wonder how the hell he stumbled upon it. This was one of those weeks. Whereas past choices have been middling, this one was pretty satisfying. Although The Breaker Upperers started off plotless and second-rate, it eventually blossomed into something that was slightly more than the sum of its parts. It is by no means great art, and some of the jokes are stale, but by and large it was entertaining. Its brief running time also ensured it didn't overstay its welcome. Plus there was an excruciating scene in a police station that was so gut-busting in its uncomfortableness that it nearly saved the entire film. (⭐️⭐️⭐️)

I'm not sure what the Popcorn Board was aiming for with naming this Popcorn con Pesto. Why not just Pesto Popcorn? Truthfully, this smelled more like pesto than tasted of it. That's not to say that it was a letdown, it just wasn't as pesto-y as it could have been. I see potential, though. Should we make this again, I'd go for fresh basil and add a few shakes of salt. Plus I'd sprinkle on the parmesan cheese rather than heat it up with the butter, which just kinda created a congealed gloop. Oh, lord. I think I'd change most of this recipe. In that regard, it was one of the Popcorn Board's few misses. Still. I'd eat it again. Just with my tweaks. [insert insouciant shrugging emoji here] (⭐️⭐️⭐️)
