The Nerdery Movie Night #130: Death to 2020 and Everything Bagel Popcorn

Despite never consulting each other whilst writing our reviews, we both cite the exact same actors in the mockumentary and weigh in on the garlickiness of the popcorn. Because of course we do.

Everything Bagel Popcorn

Dave: 2020 sucked, but this movie was a recap that you could enjoy. The writers had a delicate task - how do you make jokes about things like BLM and COVID? But for the most part they succeeded, though the cast was a large part of the magic. Hugh Grant was hilarious as the buttoned-up historian, Samuel L. Jackson was...well, Samuel L. Jackson as the narrator, Leslie Jones had some funny moments as the psychologist commentator, and Lisa Kudrow was brilliant as the Kellyanne Conway clone. More than anything, though, watching this on January 1 made me realize how damn long 2020 has been - COVID was not in the national consciousness in the first couple months of 2020, Trump was freaking hospitalized for COVID (remember!?), Kamala Harris wasn't Biden's running mate until September, and Trump's impeachment happened less than a year ago! Still, there was quite a bit glossed over - BLM in particular got short shrift - and there were a fair number of jokes that were a bit flat. Still, that this mockumentary got turned around as quickly as it did was pretty amazing, and it's worth a watch, at least until the rabid, man-eating squirrels appear in 2021. (⭐️⭐️⭐)

This was supposedly everything bagel popcorn, but everything I tasted was butter and salt. I saw little bits and pieces that were supposedly poppyseeds and sesame seeds, but they did nothing except get stuck in my teeth. If this had been billed as "tasty garlic popcorn," I'd have bought it, but it fell far short of everything bagel levels of flavor. Even so, we ate the entire bowl before we reached the Trump impeachment part of the movie, so it must have been pretty good. (⭐️⭐️⭐️)

Joe: It's not groundbreaking to state that 2020 was the biggest shitshow most of us will ever see in our lifetimes. I am loathe to revisit any of the "highlights" of the past calendar year, but Netflix's faux documentary largely makes the past 365 days palpable. This is mostly achieved by the interviews with a reputable reporter (Samuel L. Jackson, turning in his most enjoyable performance since his YouTube reading of Go the Fuck to Sleep), a psychologist (Leslie Jones - fuck you, haters, she's hilarious), a Kellyane Conway-esque White House aide (Lisa Kudrow), and a racist historian (Hugh Grant). The Biden/Trump jokes are effective, but it's the highlights - Harris becoming vice president, particularly - that demonstrate our nation's resiliency. Here's to 2021 being far less terrifying. (⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2)

Astute and longterm readers will note that we had previously made an Everything Bagel popcorn. However, that recipe was from the Food Network. This one is from our beloved Popcorn Board. Whilst making this concoction, I reduced the amount of each spice and seed - 2 tablespoons of poppyseeds and 1 tablespoon of garlic flakes seemed insane to me. Look - I love garlic, but even after reducing the measurements, this popcorn was insanely garlicky. Like, I can still taste it on my tongue and it is not pleasant. Still, I stan an everything bagel, and since northwest Ohio isn't quite the Bagel Haven, this is a fairly acceptable stand-in. Fairly, people. Fairly. (⭐️⭐️⭐️)
