The Nerdery Movie Night #168: The Power of the Dog and Churros Popcorn

We agree that the acting is outstanding, but otherwise we're split on the film. How much do we love this popcorn, though? More than Kirsten Dunst's character liked her booze. And that's a lot.

Dave: While all the performances were great, something about this film didn’t quite come together for me. Benedict Cumberbatch and Kirsten Dunst were both pretty riveting, but something about the sets and clothes made this feel like a high school production of Annie Get Your Gun. The script, too, awkwardly showed too much in some places (like constantly hammering home how much of a drunk Kirsten Dunst was) and left us all to flounder in others. Still, it was worth a watch for the final few scenes that turn much of what you’ve seen before on its head. (️️️⭐️⭐️⭐️)

We’ve done several cinnamon-heavy popcorn recipes, but I think this might be my favorite. I’m not sure if the magic came from the sugar/cinnamon/butter slurry that the popcorn was coated with or the liberal dusting of powdered sugar and cinnamon thrown over the popcorn before we ate it. But whatever it was, it worked. Would definitely make again! (️️️️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2)

Joe: Artsy. Spare. Subtle. Nuanced. Jane Campion returns to the brooding poetry of The Piano, except this time she plops her characters in a dizzyingly beautiful Montana landscape, and builds tension with sweeping shots and slightly askew camera angles. Kirsten Dunst is phenomenal, communicating an insane amount with an impassive face. Smit-McPhee, angular and effete, lends a haunting grace that makes the Holy Shit ending even more surprising. This is not an easy film, but it will reward patient viewers with its expertly crafted mood and impressive performances. (⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2)

Our middle school Spanish textbook was called Churros y Chocolate. And although that combination is certainly delicious in its own right, there's nothing more that this popcorn needed. It was like Cinnamon Toast Crunch but better - and the good Lord knows how much I love CTC. That's really all I have to say. I am Le Tired. (⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2)
