The Nerdery Movie Night #179: Postcards from the Edge and Lime Pickle Popcorn Snack Mix

Streep is a genius. MacLaine is a genius. Pickles are genius. Limes are genius. Are they all the sum of their parts?

Dave: Can a film have too much talent? Postcards from the Edge felt like it was buffeted along from performance to performance, scene to scene, but the actual plot got lost in the middle. Yes, there’s something about mothers, daughters, addiction, and stardom, but there were also some odd turns and character arcs that never got resolved. As a result it all felt a bit meandering and unmoored. But there were some lovely moments: the scene where Shirley MacLaine and Meryl Streep watch each other sing is magical and fills in so much emotional backstory with no dialogue. And Meryl Streep’s deadpan, sometimes affectless delivery feels so much like Carrie Fisher. Even with the odd structure, it’s worth a watch. (️️️️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️)

Like so many things - cigars, vanilla extract, books - this popcorn smells a lot better than it tastes. Don’t get me wrong, it tasted great, but the aroma while it was cooking was so pungent and strong, I was expecting a bit more distinct flavor. Still, I shoveled it in by the handful, and if I hadn’t been around for the overpromising cooking smells, it might even get five stars. (️️️️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️)

Joe: Two silver screen powerhouses. A script that leans heavily on pathos but acknowledges the humanity of its unlikable protagonists. A director who consistently took risks. It could've been a colossal flop or, more likely, a campy masterpiece beloved by gays the world over (see: Mommie Dearest, literally the greatest bad film ever made - suck it, The Room). Anyway, I enjoyed this film quite a bit. Streep and MacLaine trading barbs? Yes, please! Sure, there were some clunky kumbaya parts, but by and large, the film is competently made and circumspect in a way that prevents dirty laundry from becoming really dirty laundry. (⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️)

Christ, this popcorn was obnoxious to make. For one thing, it calls for 3 quarts of popcorn and a six quart Dutch oven. With our experiences with popcorn turning to mush the moment it hits a heated liquid, I decided to tailor the process a little bit. It worked, but not quite the way I thought it would - thus the "obnoxious" modifier. The "sauce" (I will use this term very loosely) is more like lumps of congealed spices in a pickle-oil-lime sauce. If that description makes you want to blow chunks, never fear. Once it's tossed with popcorn, it become a delicious, quasi-spicy concoction that tastes simultaneously curious and finger-licking. (⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️)
