The Nerdery Movie Night #238: Good Boys and Birthday Cake Popcorn

Sweet birthday baby!!!

Birthday Cake Popcorn

Dave: Macaulay Culkin walked so Good Boys could run. Why is it fun to watch a misguided, slightly naughty kid wreak havoc? In this case there were three kids, and all three were pretty spectacular - they were funny, making the many, many raunchy or otherwise inappropriate jokes land, but were also believably sweet and innocent. What could have been a tone-deaf, forgettable movie became a touching and guffaw-worthy movie where children accidentally become small-time drug dealers. Even the running gags with the kids not quite understanding an array of sex toys doesn’t get old. I know this review isn’t doing the movie justice, but really: look this one up when you need a nice, light laugh. (️️️⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2)

I’ve seen several popcorn recipes of the “just make some goop and then dump in some cake mix” variety and I’ve always avoided them. The concept just seemed gross and wrong somehow, like people with one too many pet snakes or pre-mixed carb-free cocktails. But, since it’s my birthday, I soldiered on, mixing some funfetti cake mix with white chocolate and oil and dumping it over popcorn (with added sprinkles!). And, while it wasn’t bad, I’m also not sure it was good. The white chocolate coating was pretty grainy and, while it was colorful, it didn’t have a lot of flavor. Still, it was better than some of the more sickly-sweet popcorns we’ve had. (️️️⭐️⭐️⭐️)

Joe: I honestly can't remember who recommended this movie to us, but they nailed it. For all its raunch and crude humor, Good Boys has a terrific amount of heart and speaks lovingly to boyhood friendships and the painful indignities of being a pre-teen. All three of the leads deliver some truly gut-busting moments, yet they never steal the spotlight from each other; in fact, they play off each other with an ease you don't often see with child actors. The film's madcap episodes owe a great debt to classic 80s teen films - think Adventures in Babysitting or Ferris Bueller but shot through with a lot of f-bombs and sex gags. It is a very, very funny movie. (⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️)

When Dave pulled this popcorn from chilling in the refrigerator, I thought it looked like a sugar bomb had exploded in a bowl. Sure, it's Dave's 45th birthday, but going into diabetic shock didn't really seem like the way to spend it. Friends, I don't know how Dave finds these Mommy blogs (ok - I just read his review and it's from "Delish"), but this recipe joins the ranks of tasty wins. It was sweet on sweet, but we Hoovered it up in no time. In fact, maybe I'll ask for it on my birthday! (⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️)
