The Nerdery Movie Night #59: The Final Girls and Fluffernutter Popcorn

Updated: Feb 24, 2019

An aggressively mediocre popcorn is made more palatable by a rad 80's horror send-up.

Fluffernutter Popcorn

For the umpteenth time, we swear we don’t compare reviews before we post, even if we did write nearly the exact same popcorn review this time.

Dave: I think I like horror movie spoofs and send-ups more than I like actual horror movies. This one was like an even more self-aware and snarky Cabin In The Woods, with a surprisingly touching mother/daughter subplot. Despite getting only meager backstory, the characters are endearing - it’s actually sad and not just funny when they die. I particularly enjoyed Verizon Guy’s take on the horror movie nerd trope. I also liked the even-handedness of the 80s setting. The movie had a touch of 80s horror realness, but wasn’t drowning in characters wearing neon and saying “radical!” every five seconds. (⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️)

Unlike many of our other recent popcorns, Fluffernutter left me overwhelmingly bored. The popcorn was ok, but I think half a stick of butter and gobs of peanut butter and marshmallows should make something great, or at least pretty good, not aggressively mediocre. (⭐️⭐️1/2)

Joe: Much more of a comedy than a horror film, The Final Girls is good fun. It plays on all the tropes of an 80s horror movie while having some serious mind-fuckery with the movie-within-a-movie. I was hoping for some gruesome kills and at least some frightening sequences, but almost everything is played for yuks (and, over all, the jokes are fairly solid). An added bonus was the mother-daughter relationship, which felt bittersweet. And the ending wasn’t a total cop-out, which I appreciated. (⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2)

This is the second recipe we’ve tried from this book, and like the pepperoni pizza recipe from a couple weeks ago, it lacked any kind of kick or flavor. Peanut butter + marshmallows + chocolate + popcorn should yield *something* substantial, but that wasn’t the case it all. It tasted like cardboard. I think if we move forward with the recipes from this book, we’ll need to to double the spices. (⭐️⭐️1/2)
