The Nerdery Movie Night #69: Fyre Fraud/Fyre (double feature!) and Ginger-Turmeric Popcorn

We watch two documentaries that inspire Schadenfreude and indulge in a popcorn from a new source of recipes.

Ginger-Turmeric Popcorn

We kicked off our new platform (thanks, Wix!) with a double-feature of documentaries about the ill-fated Fyre Festival!

Dave: As if we needed further proof that the Caribbean has been a dumping ground for the rest of the West for years, Fyre Festival plays on all the fantasies of paradise and hits all the exploitative notes all over again. Having worked closely with a large music festival in a small town In Tennessee, the idea that a luxe big-name festival could happen on a small island in just a few months is maddeningly ludicrous. Both documentaries showed a parade of seemingly smart former Fyre employees saying things like, “Well, they said they could do it, and who was I to disagree?” How did people start believing that magic, determination, and Instagram-likes can move mountains or, in this case, create viable plumbing and toilets from thin air? In other news, Joe and I are starting a VIP music festival in our basement - only $15,000 for an all-access pass!! Get in early and you can lay claim to sleeping on my yoga mat and pick the CD to blast while we flick the lights on an off because we couldn’t afford professional lighting or live music. #nerderyfestival #allthepopcornyoucaneat

This week, I discovered the Popcorn Board’s website - kind of like the Dairy Board or those people that did the beef commercials over Aaron Copland’s music, but for popcorn. And this recipe proves they know their stuff. It was a little sweet, a little salty, and just spicy enough. The turmeric and ginger really made this popcorn taste far different (and in some ways more adult) than any we’ve had for awhile. Added bonus: it was vaguely healthy, substituting olive oil where we would usually use butter. I’m excited to try more popcorn board recipes and hope they’re all of the same caliber as this one. Joe: Despite having never heard of it prior to the disaster, when the scandal of the Fyre Festival broke, I invested nearly every waking hour in watching the idiocy unfold. In fact, Dave, in a moment of uncharacteristic exasperation, asked me to stop updating him every five minutes on the minute-to-minute social media blitz. I still love a good grifter story, and ardently followed the Ana Delvey and Caroline Calloway stories (of which Dave also asked me to kindly take a fucking chill pill). ANYWAY. I was delighted when both Hulu and Netflix came out with competing documentaries about the Fyre Festival, and nearly begged Dave to let us do a double feature. Hulu's Fyre Fraud was almost academic in its approach. It dissected all the machinations and created unbearable tension as each layer was unveiled. Plus, it featured interviews with Billy McFarland - so it was kind of like HBO’s The Jinx. Netflix’s Fyre documentary had an obvious bias because it was tied to Fuck Jerry (the social media company who promoted Fyre Festival) and Vice. So there was less of an anchoring objectivity to it. However, it ramped up the human impact factor, demonstrating how much damage was done to the Bahamian people. Absolutely heart-wrenching. In conclusion: watch both docs back to back to get a full picture. It will be worth it. I promise.

Dave stumbled upon this website for popcorn, which is, like, a collective that lobbies for popcorn? I don’t know. But there is an insane number of recipes, and a lot of them are for savory recipes, which longtime readers will KNOW I’m all about. Anyway, this was a debut recipe, and friends, it was magnificent. The earthiness of turmeric combined with the sharpness of ginger was divine. Every now and then, a puff of popcorn would have a crystallized combination of the two, and it was like being kissed on the lips by god. I would eat buckets of this. Buckets. (⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️)
