The Nerdery Movie Night #76: Wine Country and Cheesy Bacon Popcorn

In which we both compare the popcorn to the movie. I swear to god we don't consult each other.

Bacon and Cheese Popcorn

Dave: This movie has so much potential: Rachel Dratch in a main role, Amy Pohler and Tina Fey, and Maya Rudolph being zany and hilarious. But the Hallmark channel-like story and treacly girl power subplots left a lot to be desired. There were a few belly laughs, to be sure, but it didn’t live up to the promise of the really amazing cast. (⭐️⭐️1/2)

I’ve said it before, but if a recipe uses bacon - not to mention fresh Parmesan - it shouldn’t waste such flavorful add-ins. Sadly, this popcorn did. Like the movie, it was far less than the sum of its parts. It was definitely edible and bordered on tasty when you were lucky enough to get bacon and cheese in the same bite. But mostly, it was merely okay. (⭐️⭐️⭐️)

Joe: Maya R. + Amy + Rachel + Ana + Paula + Maya E. + Tina... a recipe for brilliance. Alas. Wine Country started off pretty sluggish. It felt like a tired retread of a familiar theme without any solid jokes to make it quasi-worthwhile. It perked up in the second third, delivering some pretty solid punchlines and amusing dialogue - with Maya Rudolph (predictably) carrying most of the comedic weight. The final act was a mix of both worlds: a little bit expected and a little bit funny. Honestly, though, with a line-up like this, I figured it'd be a $50 merlot. It was more like an $5 bottle of Winking Owl from Aldi. Which, for the record, I don't really mind. So. (⭐️⭐️⭐️)

Bacon + cheese + salt + smoke flavoring + popcorn... a recipe for brilliance. Alas, like the movie, it was a bit of a disappointment. For one thing, I couldn't taste any of the flavors unless they were all clumped together in a gloopy glob (which happens all too often when we put cheese in the mix). This may only be the second recipe from the Popcorn Board that I didn't particularly like, but for whatever reason, it stung the most. Come on. Bacon popcorn. How can you fuck that up? (⭐️⭐️)
