The Nerdery Movie Night #82: Searching for Sugar Man and Spicy Italian Popcorn

We stan* Rodriguez. And this popcorn.

Spicy Italian Popcorn

Dave: Our friend Chris recommended this to us ages ago and we didn’t watch it. Then he sent us a copy and we still didn’t watch it. Finally this week we decided it was a Searching for Sugar Man week, and we were not disappointed. The story itself is nearly unbelievable, of a man who is rumored to have died but became a bigger star than Elvis or The Rolling Stones in South Africa. And it gets weirder from there. If the movie was fiction I’d give it two stars for a ridiculous storyline. But this is real life and it’s touching and heartfelt. I do feel like the movie mentions a lot that’s not entirely resolved - what really did happen to his money?, what had he been doing with himself since the 70s?, was he really a quasi-homeless drifter when he recorded his albums? Leaving those questions open added to the mystique of Rodriguez, but did the filmmakers really need to make him more mysterious than he already is? Still, it’s worth a watch. (⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2)

Spicy Italian Popcorn was only Italian because of Parmesan cheese, so far as I can tell. And only marginally spicy. That said, it would be a tasty yet inoffensive popcorn to serve at a big party: interesting enough for your foodie friends but tame enough for the pickiest 7 year olds. (⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️)

Joe: I'm a sucker for a mystery, and an even bigger sucker for an underdog story. For all intents and purposes, Searching for Sugar Man could have been a sappy pity party, but it's so masterfully constructed that it's hard not to watch with your jaw in your lap. The music is beautiful, the art direction is top-notch, and the human element is moving. Profoundly moving. Having said that, it's gobsmacking that this film won the Academy Award for Best Documentary in the same year the How to Survive a Plague was released. Quibble aside, this is a great film. (⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2))

We have a game night at a neighbor's house tomorrow. I will be making this again. Mostly because one bowl wasn't enough for me. Light on the heat, but perfect in the balance of salty cheese and spice blend. Another win for the goddamn Popcorn Board. Who are these people? (⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2)
