The Nerdery Movie Night #175: Death on the Nile and Sriracha, Lime & Sesame Popcorn

Kenneth Branagh spins us right round, baby right round. Soggy popcorn can also be delicious popcorn.

Sriracha, Lime, & Sesame Popcorn

Dave: Perhaps not every book can be made into a movie. And perhaps that’s especially true for a book that’s as plot-heavy as an Agatha Christie novel. For example: we got 40 minutes into the movie and realized no one had died yet. 45 minutes is an enormous amount of time to watch people prance around in fancy costumes being wealthy, filmed by cameras that seemed to have been attached to Lazy Susans as much as they kept spinning around. Despite the lovely cast (both Jennifer Saunders *and* Dawn French!?), the film lacked a bit of intrigue and suspense. (️️️⭐️⭐️⭐️)

Joe said I’d be shocked and saddened about where the popcorn recipe came from. Frankly, it could have come from the bowels of hell and I’d still like it. The sriracha and lime gave it a kick, but the earthiness of the sesame kept it from being overly acidic. It was all I could do not to just shove my face in the bowl, especially because absolutely nothing happened for the first half hour of the film. Now if only we could end the curse of the soggy popcorn! (️️️️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2)

Joe: Adapting Agatha Christie can't be easy - her books are slow burns and she always has about a zillion characters to keep track of. As opposed to the lackluster Murder on the Orient Express, this adaptation fared slightly better. Branagh's directorial id occasionally takes over, especially with the room-spinning camera work during intense conversations, and there are some parts leading up to the murder(s) that drag. However, there's plenty of beautiful costumes and beautiful people and Jennifer Saunders to distract you from the major missteps. Gal Gadot can't act for shit, but she's beautiful. Armie Hammer is nuts, but he's also beautiful. (⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2)

I wanted a savory popcorn (because I always want a savory popcorn), but pickins are getting slim from our usual go-to sources. It is with an ounce of sheepishness that I turned to the OG clickbait to find a recipe. Frankly, though, this wasn't terrible. It had a good amount of heat (though not as much as I would have preferred) and the addition of sesame oil to the butter emulsion provided a slight bit of unctuousness that rounded out the flavors. Definitely needed salt (which we added after a couple handfuls), but over all... not bad. (⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️)
