The Nerdery Movie Night #237: Behind the Candelabra and Mexican Corn-on-the-Cob Popcorn

Glitz! Glamour! Michael Douglas!

Mexican Corn-on-the-Cob Popcorn

Dave: I’m conflicted. I feel like I just watched exquisite high camp run through a filter for general audiences. It had the insane costumes and makeup, it had the absolutely roller coaster plot, but the edges seemed a bit refined and the ending was straight out of a sitcom or after school special. In retrospect, all of these people were wounded and this movie should have been less enjoyable, but the parade of amazing actors made it less of a treacherous watch. Michael Douglas and Matt Damon as the leads were incredible; Rob Lowe as the pill pushing doctor was Jocelyn Wildenstein levels of creepy, and Scott Bakula, Tom Papa, and Debbie Reynolds were delightful surprises. Still, it’s worth a watch and is a genuinely heartfelt (if disturbing) love story.  (️️️⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2)

This was our third attempt at this popcorn flavor combo and it might have been the most successful. The popcorn wasn’t soggy, the spices packed a punch without being overwhelming, and the cotija cheese was salty and added a touch of creaminess. The one critique I had was that the huge amount of lime peel made it all taste a bit too much like a tropical drink, but I still ate a huge portion of the bowl. (️️️️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️)

Joe: Maybe I'm showing my age when I say this, but I do not subscribe to the belief that gay roles should be reserved for only gay people. A great actor can inhabit any role. Look no further than the masterful performances of both Michael Douglas and Matt Damon in Behind the Candelabra. These are not caricatures of Liberace and his lover: these are love letters to the complicated and complex individual. Douglas in particular is magnetic. His elucidation, his movements, his flamboyance - often restrained and ostentatious in a single flourish - are the work of someone who has invested his entire being into a performance. With an all-star cast (Rob Lowe - omg!; Scott Bakula! Debbie Goddamned Reynolds!), this film is teeming with talent, and on that merit alone, it's riveting from beginning to end. (⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2)

This is our third iteration of "elote" popcorn (here's the first and second), and arguably the most successful. Rather than relying on a mayonnaise/sour cream dressing to pull the ingredients together (thereby creating an unholy soggy mess), this recipe let the cotija cheese do the talking, lending a creaminess that didn't compromise the crunch. Unfortunately, I added a dash too much of salt, but this is definitely a recipe that can easily be created again without that oversight. The lime peel provided a nice balance, and we had eaten the entire bowl well before the second act. (⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️)
